National Traveller Focus Week to be Marked in County Clare
Ennis, County Clare, Tuesday 5th December 2006 - A special event marking ‘National Traveller Focus Week’ will be held in The West County Hotel, Ennis, County Clare at 11am on Friday 8th December 2006.
The meeting will include a progress report on ‘The Strategy for Co-ordination of Public Services to the Travelling Community in Clare 2005– 2008’ while members of the local Travelling community will talk about their participation in the various programmes initiated under the Strategy. Bishop of Killaloe Dr. Willie Walsh will officially open the meeting before launching the new Traveller Newsletter for Clare – ‘Traveller Focus’. The event will also feature an exhibition of Travellers craftwork, artwork coppercraft and photographs.
The ‘Strategy for the Coordination of Public Services to the Traveller Community in Clare 2005–2008’ aims to strengthen the culture and self-governance capacity of the Traveller Community in Clare, while enhancing their quality of life in the immediate and long term. It also aims to identify and address gaps in the current provision of public services and to coordinate and integrate existing service delivery around the themes of accommodation, health, education, and work and employment.
The Social Inclusion Measures Group of the Clare County Development Board developed the Strategy by means of an extensive consultation process with agencies and travellers. Since March 2006, four implementation groups have been working to ensure that all the actions that were agreed are being progressed. The groups are made up of agency and Traveller representatives, and they have met a number of times this year to work on actions under the broad areas of Accommodation, Education, Work and Employment and Health.
Copies of the Strategy can be obtained by contacting Etain McCooey, Traveller Strategy Coordinator, County Development Board, Quin Road Business Park, Quin Road, Ennis, Co. Clare.
