Health Service Executive Seminar
Traveller Inclusion in Primary Care Teams
6th December from 10-12 noon in the Meeting Room 1, Civic Offices, Ballymun
This seminar is being organised by the HSE, in Ballymun Primary Care Centre as part of Traveller Focus Week 2006. It will provide an opportunity to increase awareness among HSE personnel and Traveller organisations of proactively incorporating the needs of Travellers in the construction of Primary Care Teams (PCTs) nationally. As you may be aware the HSE is rolling out 100 PCTs in 2006 and the new social partnership agreement, Towards 2016, provides for the establishment of up to 500 teams nationally. It is imperative that the needs of vulnerable groups are actively considered to ensure that such group's access to Primary Care Services is enhanced and in no way adversely affects such groups.
The aim of a PCT is to work in partnership with the people to support them in leading healthier and more independent lives in their own community. This aim will be achieved by the development of a strong local primary care service that operates to a standard of excellence, is responsive to local need and is highly accessible when needed.
PCTs will be introduced in areas of 10 - 12,000 population and patients will register with the team rather than individual GPs. It is imperative that travellers can access PCTs otherwise they could potentially be even further marginalised in the health system. Ballymun provides a model of good
practice in inclusion.
