Statement by Anastasia Crickley of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA)

9th July 2007

Statement from Anastasia Crickley

From the research undertaken by the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) now the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) which I have the honour to chair I know that Roma face huge discrimination throughout the European Union. Mobility of citizens within the Union is a cornerstone of EU principles. This principle is difficult to impossible to realise for many Roma in Ireland. Urgent action is required at the EU level overall.

I commend the humanitarian concern being expressed today by NGOs regarding the Romanian Roma families at the M50 junction and urge similar humanitarian responses from the authorities.
