To commemorate Roma Holocaust Memorial Day 2018, a group of 10 Irish Roma and Travellers have travelled to Poland to participate in the Roma Genocide Remembrance Initiative. This week, the group have heard from Holocaust survivors, attended sessions exploring racism and discrimination, and have visited Auschwitz concentration camp. Yesterday, over 250 participants gathered to recognise the thousands of Roma who died on the 2nd of August 1944 at Auschwitz. The commemoration was attended by Polish government officials, international ambassadors, and the European Commissioner for human rights.
The participants have been updating a blog with information and photos from each day of the trip, which you can read here.
The Irish Times have also written about the trip, and their article is available here.
Thank you to the Department of Justice and Equality, as well as everyone who donated to support the participants on this trip.
