Statement from ATD Fourth World
Statement from ATD Fourth World concerning the Roma community that has been camped on the M50 roundabout - 24th July 2007.
We wish to add our support to Pavee Point, the Roma Support Group, Crosscare and other NGOs that have chosen to respond to the emergency situation of the Roma families camped at the M50 roundabout.
The response of these organisations and others has been to befriend, accompany and provide sustenance to the families concerned, and with them and with the appropriate statutory agencies, to search for an immediate solution that provides security for the families and that respects their dignity and their family integrity.
This is an essential and appropriate response in the first instance and we wholeheartedly support it.
Finding a long-term solution to these families’ situation requires the involvement of other agencies in Ireland, in Romania and at a wider European level. This has to be founded on respect for the human rights of the Roma community and a determination to work with them, not for them, in discerning how best to provide for their needs and meet their aspirations to enable their children to lead fulfilling and useful lives.
In Ireland and around the world, the International Movement ATD Fourth World is working alongside other community, voluntary, statutory and international organisations to ensure that this same recognition of and respect for people’s fundamental human rights are at the heart of collective efforts to ensure the security and an appropriate standard of living for all people, whatever their nationality or origin.
