Pavee Point Condemns All Forms of Illegal Dumping

19th July 2005.

Pavee Point Travellers' Centre has consistently and strongly condemned all forms of illegal dumping, whether it is carried out by members of the settled community or Traveller community.

While defending Travellers right to travel and practice nomadism Pavee Point wholeheartedly condemns illegal dumping. This is not part of Travellers' culture and only serves to promote negative stereotypes and discrimination against Travellers. Many Travellers have approached Pavee Point over the years expressing deep concerns around the issue of illegal dumping and would welcome action to find solutions to this problem. Existing laws need to be enforced whereby those responsible for illegal dumping are prosecuted.

We welcome Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government TD Dick Roche's comments on today's The Tubridy Show on RTE Radio whereby he urged people disposing of waste to take responsibility about how they do so and who they give it to. People should ensure that they use licensed waste operators. There is a responsibility on both the person who collects waste for disposal and also those who are giving their waste to be disposed of to ensure that this is done legally.
