Review of Travellers Health using Primary Care as a Model of Good Practice

Pavee Fotochat

Pavee Fotochat is a pack of 94 photographs designed to be used for training. This multipurpose pack could be used from simply showing the photographs to a very complex task of demonstrating the social determinants of health. However, the result will depend on how effectively learning/teaching session is facilitated. The results may vary from group to group for the same reason. Directory of Services

The Directory of Services was designed to provide information for the Travellers living in the Finglas and Blanchardstown area. While it has information about health like the GP's, Nurses, Dentists, Chemists, Hospitals etc., it also has other information like Schools, Adult Education and Employment Services and many other valuable information which would be very helpful for the residents in the area. It was compiled by the Traveller PHC workers considering the low literacy levels among the Traveller population. The sections are colour coded for ease of use.

Environmental Health Concerns of Travellers and Progressing Environmental Health on Sites

This report was commissioned by the Traveller Health Unit in the Eastern Region and comprises research conducted in 2001 and updated in 2004. The aim of the research was to investigate and document the issues in relation to environmental health and the Traveller Community, document these issues from the perspective of Travellers and from Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) and to present Traveller organisations and local authorities with practical measures as recommendations for action towards achieving progress in relation to Environmental Health.

Summary of main findings of the Traveller Health Survey

The following section reports the summary of the main findings from the Traveller health survey. The survey was carried out in the Northern Area Health Board (NAHB). All the Traveller organisations and health staff working with the Travellers in the NAHB managed the whole study. The alalysis was done by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. There were 367 responses to this survey, however not all respondents answered every question. Therefore, the results are reported with responses noted so that the reader is aware that percentages quoted are of those that responded and not the total that were included in the survey. The results are presented in two different ways. In some cases a combined result was presented. In other cases it was felt that an area wise breakdown would give a better picture of the health status and needs of the Travellers in the area.

Working in Partnership A Report on the Activities of the Traveller Health Unit in the Eastern Region to 2004

As the Irish Health Services embark on a journey of reform the Minister for Health and Children has promised greater public representation, equity and empowered decision making at local level. The Traveller Health Unit in the Eastern Region embodies these principles and in this report we encourage readers to use our Unit as a model of good practice in providing equitable healthcare for minority ethnic groups. The Traveller Health Unit is designed to deliver equitable outcomes in health for the most marginalised group in Irish society - Irish Travellers - and to do so in the most sustainable and efficient manner. In doing this the Traveller Health Unit makes the best use of the central contribution Travellers have to make to ongoing health and well-being in the Traveller community

Caring for Diversity

Report on a research project to identify the need and potential for culturally appropriate child welfare and protection services for Travellers. This report was commissioned in 2002 and following completion in 2003 the findings were presented at roundtable discussions with service providers in the area on how best to use the finding to inform appropriate recommendations. It has been agreed that we publish this summary of the findings to facilitate further and more widespread discussion and consideration of the issues highlighted in the report.

Use of Hospital Facilities by the Traveller Community

This study was designed by a sub-group of the Traveller Health Unit (THU) including Tallaght Travellers' Support Group, Pavee Point and The Tallaght Hospital (The Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin Incorporating The National Children's Hospital (AMINCH). Funding was secured from the THU and two researchers were engaged, one from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), to do the analysis of the hospital data; and one from Community Technical Aid (CTA), to facilitate and analyse the focus studies. Two Traveller women were employed as research assistants on the focus group studies. The aim of the study was to identify Traveller access to and utilisation of acute hospital services through use of hospital data, and focus groups, and to make specific recommendations to the major hospitals, Traveller Health Unit (THU) and to Traveller organisations.

Primary Health Care for Travellers Project: Project Report for Year Ended October 1995

Only 2 out of every 100 travellers live to see 65 years of age. Travellers infant mortality rate is nearly 3 times the national average. Travellers have more than double the national rate of still births. Travellers are only now reaching the life expectancy that settled people reached in the 1940's

This, the first annual report of the Primary Health Care for Travellers project, reflects on some actions undertaken by this unit, to impact on Travellers health status. It describes and documents some of the key features of the project between October '94 and October '95.
