Friday, Oct 09 — Pavee Point’s Violence against Women (VAW) Programme attended the European Movement Ireland’s civil society forum on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls at Buswells Hotel in Dublin.
The event opened with remarks from MEP Kathleen Funchion, followed by a panel discussion with Corrinne Hasson (National Women’s Council), Sarah Benson (Women’s Aid) and Martina Walsh (CyberSafeKids), and roundtable discussions with civil society organisations. Discussions focused on the need for better implementation of policies to tackle violence against women, including the EU Directive on Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, improved access to refuge and housing supports, and greater investment in prevention.
The importance of collecting equality data, including ethnicity data, was also raised, alongside the need to recognise the different experiences and structural barriers faced by Traveller and Roma women, migrant women and women from other minority ethnic and marginalised groups.
In a separate event on Thursday (Oct 08), our VAW Programme attended an event hosted by the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) and the OHCHR focusing on Gender-Based Violence, Discrimination and Women’s Health: focusing on racism, discrimination and gender-based violence within healthcare.
One of the main messages coming from the day was that the treatment of women accessing healthcare services is just as important as access to healthcare.
PHA and OHCHR are expected to circulate initial recommendations in the coming weeks.
