Killarney Court upholds Traveller discrimination case

Killarney District Court last week awarded two Traveller women €1000 each on foot of being refused entry into McSorley’s nightclub, which was hosting a mental health charity event.

The women arrived to the nightclub and were told by the doorman that there was no event on, but other people could be seen entering with tickets. Both women had lost husbands and family members to suicide but when this topic was brought up, the doorman laughed.

McSorley’s claimed that the women were refused because they were unsteady on their feet, insisted that there was no anti Traveller policy and stated that there were 30 Travellers at the event.

Judge Olan Kelleher warded each woman €1000 in compensation and costs for a solicitor to the Irish Traveller Movement.
