This morning, and from following Palliative Care Week, Pavee Point Primary Health Care for Travellers Project, in partnership with the All-Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC), launched a new Palliative Care Leaflet during a meeting of the National Traveller Health Network. The launch was led by the PHCTP team alongside AIIHPC CEO, Melanie Nugent.
This resource ensures that Travellers receive necessary health supports with accessible and culturally appropriate information. Palliative care is not just for end-of-life or older people, it offers crucial support for anyone living with a serious or chronic illness, helping to manage symptoms, relieve pain and improve quality of life at any age or stage of diagnosis.
The leaflet addresses the stark disparities in life expectancy for Travellers: where only 3% of Travellers reach the age of 65, and life expectancy gaps remain as high as 15 years for men, and 11.5 years for women compared to the general population. Structural barriers and a lack of tailored resources often prevent Travellers with long-term conditions from accessing palliative care early. Clear, accessible information is key to breaking down these barriers and ensuring dignity and care for all.
